About Our Lady of La Vang

In 1798, during a period of fierce persecution of Catholics in Vietnam under Emperor Cảnh Thịnh, a group of faithful Catholics fled into the jungle of La Vang in Quảng Trị Province. There, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to them dressed in traditional Vietnamese clothing, holding the Infant Jesus and accompanied by two angels. She comforted them, instructed them to boil leaves from the surrounding trees for medicine, and promised to hear the prayers of all who came to La Vang to ask for her help.

The Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang was built on the site of the apparition and remains one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Vietnam. Pope John Paul II elevated it to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1961. Her feast day is celebrated on August 15, coinciding with the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
