About Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181–1226) was an Italian Catholic friar who founded the Franciscan Order. Born into wealth, he renounced his fortune to live a life of radical poverty, preaching the Gospel through joyful service and love for all of God’s creation. He is credited with composing the Canticle of the Sun, one of the earliest works of Italian literature, praising God through Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and all creatures.

He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228 and his feast day is celebrated on October 4, observed worldwide as the Feast of the Blessing of Animals.
