About Saint Ignatius of Loyola
Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Spanish priest and theologian who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540. After a cannonball wound ended his military career, he underwent a profound spiritual conversion and dedicated his life to God. His Spiritual Exercises — a structured program of prayer and discernment — remain one of the most influential works in Christian spirituality.
He was canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 and his feast day is celebrated on July 31. His motto, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God), continues to inspire millions worldwide.
"Go forth and set the world on fire." — Saint Ignatius of Loyola
