About Saint Joseph Vaz

Saint Joseph Vaz (1651–1711) was a Goan Catholic priest and member of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri who dedicated his life to serving the persecuted Catholics of Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) during a period of Dutch Protestant rule. Disguising himself as a poor beggar to avoid detection, he travelled the island on foot, celebrating the sacraments in secret, healing the sick, and reviving the faith of thousands.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized by Pope Francis on January 14, 2015, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. His feast day is celebrated on January 16.
