About Saint Moses the Black

Saint Moses the Black (c. 330–405 AD) was an Ethiopian slave and notorious gang leader in Egypt who underwent a profound conversion to Christianity after seeking refuge with the Desert Fathers of Scetis. Transformed by grace, he became a monk, a priest, and eventually a revered spiritual father known for his deep humility, wisdom, and gentleness.

He was martyred around 405 AD when he refused to flee an attack on his monastery, choosing to die rather than take up arms. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Coptic Churches. His feast day is celebrated on August 28.
